As always, these are just a guide. A tool, really. The most important thing is that you feel comfortable in what you wear, but not a “I’m-staying-in-my-sweat-pants-all-day-because-my-Snuggie-is-at-the-cleaners” kind of comfortable. You want your outfits to be representative of who you really are, just snazzed up a bit.
Picking out clothing/coordinating outfits for a family is daunting, but it doesn’t have to be. I’m here to help.![]()
Remember a few helpful tips:
-Don’t wear clothing that’s too tight. Your clothes should lay on you, not cling to you.
-Layering is a great idea as it add visual interest. Scarves, hats, jewelry, vests, and hair accessories add flair to your outfit and make it complete. Ever hear of Polyvore? Polyvore “…allows users to create fashion collages online with images clipped from any online store, now attracts 10 million unique visitors per month, making it the most-visited fashion website on the web today.”, says co-founder Jess Lee. I’m as addicted to Polyvore as I am to Pinterest. If you haven’t heard of Pinterest, then you’ve been living under a rock.
-Know your body type. Picking clothes because they look good on a mannequin is b-a-d bad. We know clothing store tricks by now, don’t we? Everything looks cute when it’s small. That’s why they use tiny mannequins and then cinch the clothing in the back with clips. Oh, and while we’re on the subject, when is the last time you saw a display shoe that was a size 9 or bigger?? Mmm hmmm. Exactly.
Search online and learn about your body type and what styles/colors look best on you and use that information as a guide when shopping. My mom used to always say, “Just because they make it in your size, doesn’t mean you should wear it.” Shop Your Shape is a great resource to help with this task. Their motto is: “It’s your shape, not your weight that matters.” You can also find them on Facebook here.
-Finally, remember that you don’t have to buy everyone new clothes. See what you already have and then make purchases that compliment the existing pieces. I’m a DIY kind of girl…actually, I think ALL southern girls are. DIY and sweet tea just go hand-in-hand.
Use Pinterest as a DIY vehicle for your what-to-wear needs.
Well, I hope this helps at least one of you. If so, it was worth it.

And whatever you wear, feel good about yourself. There’s always going to be someone “prettier/skinnier/better”, but there’s only one you. Take pride in that because when you do, it will show.
